This quilt of six monochromatic octagons representing the promise of a rainbow is York’s way of stitching our world back together at this time of division and climate change. With the ominous driving chords of the Beatles’ song of the same name echoing in her head the artist feels an urgent call to action. Selecting the octagon as an homage to a prayer of protection to join north, south, east, west , above, below, within and without as acknowledge the need to find common ground to solve the problems before us. The rainbow of color fragments comes together not to be absorbed in black or white but rather a pattern of woven colors to represent the connectedness of all things. The thin bordering fabrics represent a rainbow of colors in stripes, floral, geometric, and polka dots. The outer corners of the quilt representing the beginnings of the chaos of space through an exploding rainbow of the big bang to evolve to where we are today. The piece is quilted in concentric squares and circles. The borders of tan representing the earth and fertile soil for regrowth banded by the promise of love found in the prismatic colors of the rainbow. The quilt’s field and backing and binding are cream to represent parchment awaiting treaties and laws among peoples and nations to protect and repair our fragile ecosystem

Each of the quits for this exhibit is inspired by current affairs and the stress the artist sees in the world. Prior to this show all York’s quilts have been made for friends and family members as a way to show her love with each stitch. Wishing to stitch the world together and because quilts are a unique functional art form that provides of warmth and comfort, York hopes you will enjoy the love and passion that has gone into creating this one of a kind piece and that it may bring you comfort.
