Lamplight

The sketch for Lamplight was made on location on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. It’s all about the light on this ornate building, from the outside and from within. What makes this print unique is that it is printed from two blocks, both carved for a black image. Normally, only one block is needed for one color, but when I printed the first one, I felt that I had carved away too much. Rather than discard the block, I simply carved another to deepen the shadow areas and add details I felt it needed. At the same time, I got some interesting overlaps of black on black, and if you look carefully, you can even see some subtle differences in shades. This does mean that whenever I print Lamplight, I will be printing twice for every impression!
