I created the sky in my nightscape by ebonizing the upper portion of this live-edge (natural-edge) maple. Ebonizer is a studio-created solution that reacts with tannin in wood species. The more tannin present, the darker the treated wood becomes. The inlaid stars (and two planets!) are made of holly, and I turned the moon from a piece of yellowheart, a wood species with a natural bright yellow color. Because the moon’s location creates an uneven weight distribution on this piece, I created a horizontal sliding keyhole on the rear. Simply put a nail or screw into the wall, insert its head into the keyhole, and slide the head along the keyhole channel until your nightscape hangs straight. Voila!
