Setting Forth
"Setting Forth" began its life in the early 1970's as a simple pen and ink drawing of onions and the knives which slice them. Later I turned the drawing into various multi-colored silk screen prints which by the 1980's had been cut up to inhabit a diptych called "Leaving Home." It traveled to Jerusalem to be with my sister and her husband, (Paul's brother). When, more than 30 years later, the family returned to the States and gave the piece back to me, I put it in a closet where it stayed until 2024 when I enriched it by adding more bird-like forms, and all the light blue and violet. I exhibited it with its present name in a Poughkeepsie gallery. As both referential and non-objective forms show up in this piece, it is emblematic of both sides of my artistic life which has matured since I first set forth.
