This rustic wood menorah with a live (natural) edge contains spectacular black spalt patterns on both the plank and its edges. The spalt is due to the metabolic process of fungi that once inhabited the wood. The shamash candle holder is made of wenge, a wood species characterized by black and chocolate-colored grain.

Notice that the spalt patterns on both sides of the base plank match almost exactly; it's because they're bookmatched. I made the match by cutting a straight edge along one side of a spalted plank and then slicing the plank into two thicknesses. Next I aligned the slices along their straight edges, in effect positioning them like two open pages in a book. Finally, I glued their edges together. Voila! A piece with almost identical spalt patterns joined in the center. (Look for the union in the photos; I bet you can't find it!)

The menorah's solid brass candle cups and splash rings are easily removed for cleaning. Also, several coats of hand-rubbed lacquer make it easy to remove any wax that might land on the surface during use. Simply use the edge of an old credit card or another similarly smooth-edged object to easily dislodge the wax.

Do not leave burning candles unattended. Note: Candles are not included.
