This closed-knot rustic wall clock features spalted birch with a live edge (natural edge). It boasts dynamic and highly unusual coloration throughout, as well as track marks on its edges left by insects that once burrowed just beneath the bark. (The photo enlargement shows tracks visible on the clock’s upper natural edge.) An ebony inlay marks the 12 o'clock position, and padauk (vermillion) inlays mark the quarter hours. The battery-driven quartz clock movement is partially recessed into the rear, making this clock seem to float on the wall, with lively shadows cast from various angles. This clock has been finished with a satiny lacquer that preserves the surface and showcases the wood's wild reds, browns and grays.
